Technique and Theory of Modern Dance (2 credits) Modern Technique and Theory is designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore in greater detail the concepts and principles of modern dance. Students will have opportunities to discover movement and personal expression, taking artistic risks through personal interpretation of the movement. As they develop their personal identity in modern dance they will also develop an understanding of modern dance as art, craft, and science.

Chinese Dance (2 credits) Chinese Dance will provide the student with the opportunity to survey traditional Chinese folk dances as preserved and transformed over time. The students will develop an understanding of traditional eastern dance and have the opportunity to see how the dances are connected to the larger world of China.

Tai Chi Ch’uan (2 credits) Tai Chi Ch’uan is an ancient Chinese martial art of rounded, fluid, balanced movements that relax the mind as well as the body. It is a Chinese form of exercise derived from Taoism (the 4th century B.C.), one of China’s oldest philosophies. Tai Chi Ch’uan is composed of breathing exercises and meditations. The benefits of practicing include: relaxation of body and mind, and aid in digestion, circulation, and flexibility. Students will learn the sets of long form Yang style in a slow and relaxed manner.
DAN 494/598 Philosophy and History of Asian Dance Cultures (2 credits)
This class will be devoted to extensive exploration of the philosophies and history of dance cultures throughout Asia. Emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of the role of dance in each of these cultures as it has developed historically within the country of origin as well the influence of other countries.
